Earth Day is one of the largest civic-focused days of action in the world held every year, where more than 1 billion people in 192 countries take part in green initiatives to highlight the importance of sustainability.

On April 22, 2018, each of the Crown & Champa Resorts showed their support of the initiative with a variety of activities involving guests and staff, from Reef & Lagoon Cleaning to educational tours and the daily commitment towards a greener Maldives.

Under the theme “End Plastic Pollution” and the impact of plastic on the Indian Ocean, Veligandu Island Resort & Spa and Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa held a lagoon cleaning activity to maintain the beauty and health of the marine life. The activity included members of the Euro-Divers and Ocean Dive Center teams, as well as staff and in-house guests at the respective Resorts.

Kuredu Island Resort & Spa held an active Island cleanup, while Meeru Island Resort & Spa hosted an informative Nature Walk and Back-of-House Tour. As TUI-certified Environmental Champions of 2017, the two Resorts continue to be leaders in sustainable efforts, with Kuredu recently introducing an eco-friendly linen bag to help guests recycle items back home that currently cannot be recycled in the Maldives.

Earth Hour Maldives 2018

This year the Crown & Champa Resorts equally participated in Earth Hour, held on Saturday March 24, 2018. The initiative sees an astounding number of participation from 185 countries and millions of people around the world turning off their lights for one hour, as a symbolic commitment towards positive environmental change.

Each Resort took part in switching off the lights between 2030 and 2130, with speeches from General Managers encouraging guests and staff alike to do their bit in supporting our initiatives.

Other highlights include special Candlelight dinners on the beach, especially prepared with the Earth Hour theme, fun and games around the white, sandy beaches, as well as candle lighting ceremonies of the 60+ symbol, drawn on the sand.

As the largest global demonstration of support for action on climate change, Earth Hour highlights the negative impacts on our environment while encouraging a dialogue on ways to improve our contributions to the planet’s sustainability.

With the theme #Connect2Earth relating to biodiversity, the Maldives is the best place to highlight the importance of our land and marine ecology.

The Maldives thrives on tourism and the pristine natural environment of the Islands, and encouraging sustainable operations and responsible practices is an integral part of Eco-conscious Hospitality and Eco-Tourism. This is in line with the values of Crown & Champa Resorts, as the leading tourism and hospitality group in the country towards preserving the natural environment.

Over the years, Crown & Champa Resorts have maintained award-winning, exemplary sustainable tourism enjoyed by all our guests, and every single contribution from guest’s counts.

Each light switched off, each tap closed, each coral left undamaged and each recycled item all go a long way towards our efforts to maintain our beautiful Islands. Together, we can make the necessary change.
